When people look at wood they see a material that needs to be shaped and molded. they focus on the visual aesthetics of the wood and spend a lot of time looking for wood without defects. I prefer to look for wood that has character and that can tell a story, which usually means that it has lots of defects. Once I find an interesting piece, I try to find a way to incorporate its story in the sculpture, print or piece of furniture. In my wood prints, I let the growth rings tell the history of the wood. In my sculpture, I work with the defects in the wood in a way that highlights them and allow them to add characterto the piece.
