Listening to the wood
Wood is an organic material. Like the human skeleton, the macroscopic and microscopic cellular structure of wood provides a story about the forces that shaped and influenced the growing tree. As an artist, woodworker and wood scientist , I look at the wood and try to get a sense of the history of the tree and the forest it came from, both by looking at growth rings and well as the physical structure and defects on the wood. This process helps me to understand how to best use the wood in my prints and sculptures. My work with wood falls into three categories, wood prints, wood sculptures and furniture.
